Retired Police Officer Arthur Sanders “Art” Copeland passed away on Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at the age of 67.  At the time of his passing, he was dealing with complications from COVID.

Officer Copeland was born in Jacksonville, Florida and graduated from Terry Parker High School.

In 1973 he joined the United States Marine Corps and trained as a Field Radio Operator and Parachutist.  He was promoted to the rank of Corporal before being Honorably Discharged in 1975.

He began his career with the J.S.O. in February 1976 – 1986 as a Patrolman in the Westside.  From 1986-1987 he worked in the Communications Center and from 1987-1996 he was reassigned to Patrol in the Westside.  From 1996-2001 he was assigned to the Traffic Special Enforcement Unit at the Southbank then the Jacksonville Landing.  In 2001 – May 2002 he worked at the Zone 1 substation where he retired after serving more than 26 years with this agency. 

After retiring from the J.S.O. he worked for the Jacksonville Zoo, as a “Train Operator”, for 6 months before becoming a Chief Bailiff at the Duval County Court House for Divisions E&L from 2003-2006.

From 2007-2010 he became a fleet service agent for J.I.A (U.S. Airways) before employment as an Armed Security Officer for “G4S Secure Solutions” from 2010-2019.

After retiring from G4S, he remained retired to enjoy quality time with his family and friends until his passing.

Officer Copeland is preceded in death by his Mother (Mai Maudeline Flemming Copeland) in 2008, his Sister (Reta Maryanne Copeland) in 2009 and his father (Arthur George Copeland) in 2010.

He is survived by his wife (Marcia) of 43 years of marriage, brothers Ted Kavinsky, Michael Blair Copeland (Karen) – Former JSO Corrections Lieutenant, Mark Christian Copeland (Paula) – Former JSO Police Officer, Christopher Valdez (Joan), and sister Catherine Hart.

Officer Copeland will be cremated.

Memorial service: Thursday, September 22, 2022 at 11:30a.m. at the Jacksonville National Cemetery (4083 Lannie Rd).

The J.S.O. Honor Guard will participate with the United States Marine Corps for honors as well as Chaplain Clarence Jarrell being present.
